# Getting Started

An incident is a record of a service disruption or performance issue. When something breaks, an incident gets created to track everything from the first alert to the moment it's fixed.

### How are incidents created?

* **Automatically from monitors:** This is how most incidents start. When a monitor picks up a problem, an incident is created.
* **Manually from the dashboard:** You can open an incident yourself directly from the dashboard, which is useful
